UNWRITTEN LAW // Brings The Black Album Back To Oz

If you grew up in the ’90s in Australia, there’s probably a fair few great punk rock albums that you jammed out too with your mates. No doubt one of these albums was the (initially) self-titled, third studio release from SoCal band Unwritten Law. That’s right, we’re talking about The Black Album.

Now twenty years on, The Black Album, is still held in high regard among fans and has been engraved into the lives of Australians all over the country. And to add to that, Unwritten Law has been one of the most fully-embraced international bands that Australia has known.

Ahead of their highly anticipated return to Oz, Mike Hohnen from Hysteria Radio caught up with front-man Scott Russo to talk all things tour related. And boy did we get more than we bargained for.

With two of their shows selling out in the first couple of weeks, Scott dropped a bombshell on us when Mike said they should just add more shows …

“We actually are.”

WAIT, WHAT?!

“We’re gonna extend the tour by four shows, it literally got decided this morning. The promotor asked if we wanted to play more shows and I’m like fuck yeah! We only come down here once everyone one or two years, of course we want to stay!

Okay so fucking woohoo! But with such a huge amount of support for this tour before they’ve even made it to the country, there’s got to be some pressure.

“I know that The Black record in Australia was a part of people’s lives. And so I almost don’t want to think about [touring it], cause I don’t want to freak myself out too much. But I’m definitely super excited to experience it [all again] for sure. It’s like, you shouldn’t pick a favourite child, but I know [The Black Album] is my favourite kid.”

And while it may be Russo’s favourite kid, he acknowledges that as an artist he’ll forever be trying to think how it could be better.

“Going back to these songs, I’m listening to them and I’m like maybe we should’ve done this here, we should have done that there. I think I’ll always be fussing. Everything can always be better [because] an artists work is never really done.”

Which could explain why Scott hinted that the next release from Unwritten Law is more Black Album-esque than anything else.

“We are seven songs complete for the new record, and ironically it does sound a bit [like] The Black Album. I’m not sure that’s a coincidence or a sign, [but] yeah that’s where we’re at.”

We wouldn’t be surprised if history repeats itself and, ten years from now, we end up chatting with Unwritten Law once again, when they do an anniversary tour of this new album.
