Promising, with room to grow

Pierce The Veil and Sleeping With Sirens are officially old news. They’re still banging out quality tunes but the kids don’t want bands that first released a track when they were six years old. The new wave? Bands like Melbourne’s Windwaker are a great place to start. Awake and Take Me With You could easily be mistaken for Vic Fuentes fronted tracks, and Destroyer has the pit destroying capability to make it hard enough for the heavy lovers. Castaway is still the EP’s strongest cut with the whirling synth and gang vocals showing promise beyond their years.

After a season of reinvention, Windwaker have the potential to grow in any direction they please.

For those older than Snapchat, this won’t re-invent the wheel. Things do become a bit same-same at points during Fade, but thankfully it doesn’t drag on to the point of annoyance. After a season of reinvention, Windwaker have the potential to grow in any direction they please.

Windwaker are set to release their Fade EP on 31 May. Pre-orders are available below.

Fans will note that Windwaker have already dropped two tracks from the record: Castaway and The Destroyer. Produced/mixed/mastered by Sonny Truelove (The Amity Affliction, Prepared Like A Bride, The Brave), Fade is the first real taste of Windwaker’s future. Ahead of the release, singer Will King says of the record’s beginnings: “Kicking off the writing process for this release, we all felt very much on the same page about what sound we wanted to pursue. I guess the difficult part was trying not to evolve too quickly in the lead up to getting it out. Heading into the studio with Sonny, the songs had been written for the better half of a year, so it was very challenging for all us to stay true to the songs as they were written. Our playing styles had changed dramatically, and for me, my vocal tones were so different from the initial demos. It was tough.” Knowing there’s room to improve is a hallmark of quality songwriters; it’s promising that Windwaker are set to take the lessons they’ve learned on board for their future endeavours.
